Artist Nicola Smith

Nicola Smith

Nicola Smith is a mixed media artist whose work focuses on the feminine energy that connects life and death, discomfort and metamorphosis, decay and beauty. Growing up in South Africa, her work is influenced by the harsh nature and exquisite beauty of the natural world as well as a ravenous curiosity about the stories we tell ourselves as human beings, and the mythologies we create about things we cannot see, be they ghosts, demons or things that go bump in the night.

My work is experimental in both subject matter and medium, with individual works often including at least 8-10 different mediums and or techniques. I am particularly interested in exploring how to layer materials to create more 3-dimensional experiences that draw viewers in and challenge their perception of space, their comprehension of how life and death are connected, and their understanding of female power dynamics in society.
